Upper Abdominals - Lower Abdominals - Obliques

ABDOMINALS (Rectus Abdominus, Tranversus Abdominis) - The abdominals are made up of two different muscles. The rectus abdominis, known as a "six pack", which is a long muscle starting at your pubis that inserts into the cartilage of the fifth, sixth and seventh rib and extending along the front of you up to your sternum. The Transversus Abdominis, better known as the body's "internal weight belt", is the deepest muscle of the abdominal wall with the muscle fibers running horizontal across the abdomen.
Basic function: To flex the spinal column and draw the sternum toward the pelvis.

OBLIQUES (External, Internal) - The external obliques, are the muscles at each side of your body and are attached to the lower eight ribs and insert into the side of the pelvis. The internal obliques lie under the external obliques and form an inverted V along the abdominal wall.
Basic function: To flex and rotate the spinal column.
